2021 HK TYPHOONS SUPER CYCLONE TOURNAMENT
(Ddecember 16-19, 2021)
The Super Cyclone Tournament from 16th to 19th December 2021 proved again that HK Typhoons, the largest youth ice hockey organization in Hong Kong continues to serve the community in a collaborative approach. Over 250 youth players in five divisions and participation from all the major ice hockey clubs in Hong Kong sending their teams and coaches. We worked with other ice hockey organizations to promote this family-oriented and fun sport as we believe an affable long term partnership benefits the ice hockey community. Special thanks and congratulations to HKIHA, Dbees, Warriors, players from SWOT, HKAIH and KPK for being part of this successful tournament.

The U6 division saw four teams playing cross-ice games. The finals between Kompasu and Dbees brought much joy and excitement as the little ones waddled across the ice eyeing to touch the puck. Those mini ice hockey players battled hard to score goals, and we could see so many smiles on those small baby faces. Team Warriors finished 4th, Team Choi-Wan finished 3rd, Team DBees finish 2nd and the Team Kompasu won the Champion of this division.

The 3 teams U8 division brought the excitement to another level with the finals between teams Hato and Wanda with team Wanda coming out of three periods with a win. We saw a lot of improvements since Summer. Passing, skating, positioning and shooting was much better for the pleasure of the coaches and all the parents that were watching those young players battle for the championship. At the end, Team Typhoons Red finished 3rd, Team Hato finished 2nd, and Team Wanda won the Champion of this division. What a blast to see the smile on the face of the players from Team Wanda, as most of them lost the final at the summer tournament.

U10 had the largest group of players, two pools comprising of a total of six teams compete in the qualifying rounds. Around 90 players had been battled really hard, all games were with high tempo, and we could see some really good plays and some beautiful goals. Team Dragon Z finished at 6th place and Team Lion Rock finished at the 5th place. Teams Fung Wong and Haima battled to the last minute with an empty net for the gold and teams Dbees and Dragon X for the bronze medal. Congratulations to Fung Wong on winning the gold and Dbees on the bronze!

The U12 division had four teams of excited players to play tournaments again started the four day long battle to the gold. Round robin each team played agains each other once. We saw exciting games, where teams had to show moments of defending under pressure, attacking with speed and creating offence through corner plays. After round robin semi-finals, Team Yutu and Team Dragon fought their way to the final. Team Bloody Mary and Team Ellen took the fight of bronze, Team Bloody Mary coming out stronger claiming the medal. Final between Team Yutu and Team Dragon was a close game until the last seconds Team Yutu looking for equalising goal without the goalie, but Team Dragon held strong and claimed the gold medal with 2-1 win over Team Yutu. Good competition, good sportsmanship and good atmosphere was the key words before the tournament and all players delivered.

The U13 Division was very much anticipated due 2008 born players not having a chance to play together in competition for past couple seasons. Division was two team division (Team Haima & Team Dragon) where 4 games total goal difference will determine the winner. Games were fast, physical, full of great individual skills, tough battles and great goaltending on both sides. Both teams played well in their systems working together up and down on the ice. Scoring was a challenge as both team’s goalies had a great tournament. At the last, Team Haima came on top on three games with one game tied, Haima took the gold medals with a very solid performance not losing a game in the tournament.

In the heat of the competition during Saturday afternoon, the crowds and players gathered for the Chuck a Puck game. Winners excitedly collected their prizes with the top prize being an Apple AirPods pro. Following this was the Hong Kong Typhoons parents exhibition game where beginners showed off their ice hockey skills and to the amusement of their kids and fans.
